What does absence and turnover really cost your business?

Enter a few figures about your team. The calculator uses Dutch sick-pay rules and the latest CBS absence data to estimate what illness, stress and people leaving cost you each year.

Your team
€

Excluding holiday allowance. Use the average across the whole team.

%

Holiday allowance, pension and social premiums. 30–40% is typical in the Netherlands.

Sickness absence
%

Share of working days lost to illness. Don't know yours? Start with the Dutch average.

×

Cover, lost output, extra pressure on colleagues and manager time. 1.5× is conservative; many occupational health experts use 2–2.5×.

People leaving
% of salary

Recruitment, onboarding and the months before a new hire is fully up to speed. Senior and specialist roles often cost 50–150%.

How the estimate works

  • Loaded payroll = employees × salary × (1 + employer costs).
  • Sick pay = loaded payroll × absence rate. Dutch employers keep paying at least 70% of wages for up to 104 weeks of illness, and most pay 100% in year one.
  • Hidden costs = sick pay × (hidden-cost factor − 1).
  • Turnover = leavers × salary × replacement cost.
  • Days lost assume 230 available working days per employee.

Where the benchmarks come from

  • Absence across Dutch employees averaged 5.4% in 2025 and 5.6% in Q4 2025 (CBS). Absence is lowest in the smallest firms and highest in care and welfare (7.5%).
  • Industry estimates put the full cost of one absence day at €250–400 for Dutch employers.
  • *Around 30% of absence days in 2025 were linked to psychological complaints, according to occupational health providers. The stress figure applies that share to your absence costs.

This is an indicative estimate for conversation, not financial or legal advice. Your own figures from payroll and your occupational health provider (arbodienst) will give a sharper picture.
